Introduced as part of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) ensure that people in care homes, hospitals and supported living arrangements are looked after in way that does not inappropriately restrict their freedom. DoLS make sure that when someone is deprived of their liberty this is done in a safe and correct way, and only when this is in the person’s best interests and there is no other way to keep them safe.
