When an adult with mental capacity gives someone permission to do something for them. In health and social care settings, it usually means that the adult gives consent to take part in an activity or to accept some kind of care or treatment. Adults should be helped to understand what is being proposed, the benefits and risks and what the alternatives are if they do not consent. Consent can be provided orally, in writing or by action. Adults can change their mind at any time and withdraw their consent.
